Uwe Boll at the AfterDark Film Fest

Uwe Boll at After Dark So a bunch of us went out to the After Dark Film Fest last night to see Uwe Boll’s latest flick, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.
Uwe was there to introduce the flick, but he just talked about how tired he was because of some sort of problem with his keys in Germany… I don’t know.
Anyway, so the film was interesting. I’ll admit- before last night I had never seen an Uwe Boll movie. That hasn’t stopped me from jumping in with the masses and calling him a sucky filmmaker… and for that, I have to apologize. The movie, in a nutshell, is an adaptation of DungeonSiege with Jason Statham as “Farmer” the hero, Ron Pearlman as an old battle-axe warrior, Ray Liotta as an evil wizard, Lee Lee Sorberski as some wizard princess, Matthew Lillard as the king’s wacky nephew, and Burt-frigging -Renoylds as the king who seems to be terribly interested in farming seaweed for some reason. The acting and plot itself is rather tacky, and lots of laughs come from unintentional moments where the movie takes itself too seriously, but in that sense- it IS really entertaining. Certainly worth a rental.
But after seeing his latest, I’ve come to the determination that Uwe Boll is not a TERRIBLE Director, but merely an ALRIGHT one. He has potential, but he needs to find his right niche or genre. Still, as much as people talk down of the man, think of this- he’s an independent German filmmaker, making films that get mass North American and Worldwide distribution! And indeed, they are “A-list” films with A-list actors. So basically, I think Uwe Boll is a fucking brilliant INDIE PRODUCER for figuring out how to beat the system and make these films, but has a long way to grow in Directing before he can really lay claim to the “A-list” title.

Now I gotta see Postal!

And I’m going to the Afterdark Film Festival’s closing night Film, Murder Party!
