Being a spec screenwriter is tough. Being a screenwriter/director/producer is impossible… well, let me amend that… being a POOR writer/director/producer is NIGH impossible. But hey, if there’s a “nigh” there’s a way, right?
That’s where Mr. Lazy comes in. Mr. Lazy doesn’t like to DO things. He would much rather prefer playing online RISK and financially masturbating to the cheap smiles and bared teeth of pop-up ads. It’s a bright sunny day outside, but Mr. Lazy prefers to stay indoors. Maybe he’ll just think about the possibility of doing stuff. Maybe he won’t.
But it stops right here. Mr. Lazy… you can do all that shit when I’m dead.
Alright- let’s not be too down on ourselves here. It’s not JUST Mr. Lazy. Life can be harrowing and fraught with peril… sometimes when shit piles up you just can’t throw on the ol’ creative cap and start plugging away… but still- that’s only the excuse for the problem. Sometimes, you gotta buck up and make shit happen.
Which leads me to my new regiment. No, not a diet.. a Screenwriting Regiment.
That’s right. From today until the end of the month, I am going to write TWO PAGES per weekday and FIVE PAGES per week-end-day. That’s 20 pages a week, roughly. What does that mean to me? It means a first (rough) draft by the end of the month for my latest screenplay endeavor.
And why do we do this? Why force this jelly out of your brain and onto a page at such a speedy rate? Well, for one, the pros like Unk and Clive swear by it. For another, I spent November twiddling away on projects that really aren’t going anywhere (yet) and all of my “big” projects have been put on the back-burner because of it. Also, because it gets me in the HABIT of writing and puts WORDS on a page. And again, because I want at least a FIRST DRAFT of the FULL SCRIPT finished before the end of the year.
So I’ve put my daily regiment as high as humanely possible in the hopes that by the end of this month I’ll have turned an idea that’s been floating around in my head for YEARS onto a series of number pages.
Of course, I doubt it’ll be much more than numbered pages, but hey, that’s what editing is for, right?
Right?
