Apparently Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment last night, according to the trades…You remember him of course from Brokeback Mountain, A Knight’s Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You… but it was his upcoming role as The Joker in Batman: The Dark Knight which I was most looking forward to. It’s hard to say he was a “rising star”, since he had already received an Oscar Nomination, but from the looks of his project selections and taste, the young Aussie actor was FAR from his peak. In fact, from the looks of his performance as Joker in the Dark Knight trailer and his choice of roles, Heath was well on his way to becoming the next generation’s Johnny Depp.
Sadder still, he died before filming Terry Gilliam’s latest- The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus… which makes me feel bad for Gilliam, especially after watching Lost In La Mancha, to which Gilliam struggled with bad luck on a film that eventually got canned. Now, I guess Gilliam will have to re-cast, provided he already hasn’t started shooting…
So RIP, Mr. Ledger. Hopefully there’s a big screen in the afterlife which you can continue lighting up.
