So I rented Eastern Promises the other night, knowing only two things: Cronenberg directs and Viggo Mortensen plays a Russian guy.
The movie itself is well written and paced… it follows a British nurse (Naomi Watts) living in Russia and getting tangled up in the Russian mob scene. It’s like the Russian Godfather, only more “murder-mystery”… and it does have a good, but predictable, twist in the end.
But what really threw me off was the naked-steam-house fight. Full-frontal Aragorn-porn. Viggo’s runnin’ around beating the shit out of two guys completely naked. In the tone of the film- it worked… but WTF!?! I mean, I get that the effect was supposed to be that this dude’s completely exposed and he kicks ass anyway (and the tattoos were important), but it just weirded me out… because…. it’s Aragorn… and the shards of Narsil are bouncing around unabashed. Brave on Viggo, who’s one of the finest actors out there, but it was just a little bizarre to see a completely naked Ranger-dude doing spin kicks.
But that aside, the film is brilliantly acted and expertly crafted in all aspects. Definitely worth seeing- but the nightmares of a naked, Russian, King of Gondor might just haunt you for the rest of your life.
