So the great big fire of this week (less than half a block from where I work) is out and the inspectors are in, cleaning out the rubble and trying to determine to cause of the fire.
I snapped a couple pics of the aftermath:

And another angle:

Pretty gruesome. Apparently Dukes Cycles didn’t even have fire insurance! That sucks, considering they had been there for like 60,000 years. I was talking with a convenience store owner just down the street from the hub-ub, and she said that for her TINY (I mean fuckin’ TINY) corner shop, she HAS to pay $3000/month for insurance! Insane! And it’s illegal NOT to have insurance, and every year it goes up astronomically, because they buildings were all built in the early 1900’s. It’s fucking ridiculous that insurance is SO high with NO cap… the government needs to REGULATE the insurance industry man- it’s out of control. If you’re going to make it ILLEGAL to NOT have insurance, then fucking PROVIDE the goddamn insurance yourself at a LOW affordable rate… Otherwise, shops like Duke’s (which must have been well over $5000/month) will be forced to only take basic insurance without fire coverage, or risk going out of business… Or maybe it’s a big conspiracy… maybe the Government, Condo Developers and Insurance giants got together and said “Queen st. West is prime real estate, let’s burn the mutherfucker down”? Who knows? Maybe Donald Trump is behind it all, with his sinister hair? I don’t know, but it sounds like a job for the NDP, so fix the fucking MESS that is insurance. C’mon Jack Layton, throw your mustache into it and give those insurance companies a good tickle!
